Why Rust Locks a Screw In

Rust is iron oxide — what forms when iron meets water and oxygen. The oxide layer is flaky, reddish-brown, and expands as it grows, so it wedges the thread tighter into the substrate. That's why a rusted screw fights back harder than a clean one.

9 Ways to Get a Rusted Screw Out

We rank these from non-invasive to last-resort:

  1. Penetrating oil. Soak the head with a multi-purpose penetrating lubricant and let it work for minutes (or hours on bad cases) before turning.
  1. Heat. A hairdryer or heat gun makes the metal expand and breaks rust's grip. Keep flame away from anything flammable.
  1. Vinegar. Its acid dissolves rust — soak or wrap the head for a few hours, then try.
  1. Baking-soda paste. Mild abrasive; smear on, wait, then turn.
  1. Impact driver. Delivers a sharp rotational punch that cracks rust free. Steady counterclockwise pressure.
  1. Pliers / locking pliers. If the head is still graspable, clamp and turn.
  1. Screw extractor. Drill a center hole, insert the reverse-threaded extractor, and back it out.
  1. Hammer + screwdriver. Tap counterclockwise as you turn to add shock and friction.
  1. Cut a new groove. With a rotary tool or hacksaw, cut a slot and use a flathead for torque.
